Position description

The Centre for Effective Altruism (CEA) is seeking a part-time assistant to support the smooth running of our Oxford offices.

CEA aims to improve the world by supporting the growth and development of the effective altruism community. Effective altruism is a growing social movement dedicated to using evidence and reason to figure out how to benefit others as much as possible.

One of our projects is to manage Trajan House, a newly established EA hub in Oxford. It currently accommodates the Centre for Effective Altruism, the Future of Humanity Institute, the Global Priorities Institute, the Forethought Foundation, the Centre for the Governance of AI, and Our World in Data.

We want Trajan House to be a place that boosts productivity, enables new ideas and collaborations to arise, and supports people’s long-term wellbeing. We offer daily catered lunch in a spacious cafeteria and an abundance of snacks, drinks and other tasty things in the communal kitchens, a free gym, and a nap area.

In this role, you will work with our office manager to ensure that food, logistics, mail, etc. all operate smoothly in the office, thus supporting many high-impact professionals.

Responsibilities

  • Ordering food, and make sure that we accommodate everyone’s dietary preferences
  • Making sure all rooms are equipped with the right equipment
  • Ordering supplies, researching products, installing new products and devices in the office etc.
  • Returning packages, clearing out clutter, managing incoming parcels,
  • Troubleshooting any issues that arise, e.g. broken equipment, late deliveries, etc.
  • Talking to office users to get their feedback and solve problems they have
  • Onboarding new office users, making sure they have everything they need and know where to go with questions or issues
  • Help to plan and execute office events

Who is suited for this role?

This role requires 20-40 hours per week. The exact amount will be agreed with the successful candidate.

The ideal candidate will be:

  • Detail-oriented: You have a keen attention to detail and the ability to execute tasks without error
  • Action-oriented: You love getting things done and have a “can-do” attitude
  • Service-minded: You are comfortable with a support role that involves some repetition; you are motivated by the idea of contributing to what CEA needs most, even if it’s not glamorous.
  • Independent: You can use discretion to execute on tasks without step-by-step instructions.
  • Excited to provide an excellent service: You’ll treat staff across the organisations as “customers,” who we are supporting

Salaries, benefits, and advantages

This is a role for 20-40 hours per week (depending on the candidate's availability), reporting to Jonathan Michel, Operations Associate. You need to be able to work in Trajan House, Oxford. You will be employed as a contractor, earning a rate of between £19-21 per hour.

Additionally, you can use the office and all its amenities during the rest of the week (including the gym, daily catering etc.). Additional upsides of the job are the ability to meet and network with the people working at the office and getting experience working in operations.
