EA Virtual Programs Associate

Position description

The Centre for Effective Altruism (CEA) is building a community of people acting on EA principles, by nurturing high-quality discussions and education. We hope that this will help lead to a world where effective and impartial service to others is a core commitment of global leaders, thinkers, and philanthropists. The Effective Altruism Virtual Programs contribute to this by providing an opportunity for people to learn about EA ideas and to develop their thinking alongside others who are interested in EA. We are looking for someone to help us manage these programs.

About the role

Virtual Programs allow anyone with an internet connection to have deep discussions with other people who want to think thoroughly about how to make the world better. It is one of the few spaces that has real-time EA discussions with no geographic barriers. Over 2000 people completed the Virtual Programs in 2022.

The EA Virtual Programs Associate would be part of the Groups Team at CEA, the same team that supports university groups, city & national groups, and professional network groups. The core aspects of the EA Virtual Program Associate role would be to oversee and administer all of the Virtual Programs that are facilitated by CEA (Introductory EA Program, In-Depth EA Program, The Precipice Reading Group).

You will:
  • Run the operations of the Virtual Programs, including training facilitators, tracking metrics, selecting cohorts, and making sure there is a smooth learning experience for participants.
  • Continually optimize and improve the systems and processes involved in running the Virtual Programs. This includes optimization of learning outcomes, optimization of participant experience, follow-through to next steps, and participant selection.
  • Help strategize about future directions by conducting user research, participating in brainstorming with other team members, or helping run new programs.
  • Interview and assess applications from facilitators.
  • Assess applications from participants.
About you

We are looking for someone who will be able to implement improvements across all of the above areas. You might be a good fit if you:

  • Take initiative and have a "get stuff done" mindset. There are a variety of activities involved in improving the EA Virtual Programs that need someone with both a continuous improvement mindset and a willingness to roll up sleeves and dive into a project. These might be things like "make an improved application form," "improve standards for communication with facilitators," or "coordinate writers for new content."
  • Stay organized when there is lots going on. With multiple cohorts occurring at any given time, keeping track of who is doing what and when it needs to happen helps the programs run smoothly.
  • Communicate clearly in writing. Much of the communication in this role involves written communication via email or via Slack.
  • Create a congenial and motivating environment for facilitators. Our facilitators are volunteers with payment of only a small stipend, and they continue to support the program as long as they feel motivated and can see the impact that they are having.
  • Have a considered view on what the path to a radically better world looks like. This is so that you can focus on making sure the virtual program is actually making the world better, and helping participants take actions that align with that.
  • Are comfortable with numbers. You have an instinct for when a number looks wrong, and you can use spreadsheets to track metrics. When we make changes to a program, the results are often subtle and it can take a bit of poking around to understand if a change was an improvement.
  • Have some background in education or online learning. You understand what it takes to run successful online or educational programs that keep their participants engaged, communicate concepts well, and result in positive outcomes for the students.
  • Have participated in and have been a facilitator for the EA Virtual Programs. This would give you a good understanding of how the Virtual Programs function, and would help you to understand the perspectives of the participants.
